This Midyat day tour from Mardin packs the monasteries, ruins and old streets east of the city into one well-paced day with a guide. We collect you at 08:30 from Mardin airport, the bus station or your accommodation, and you are back in Mardin at about 20:30 after a round trip of some 420 km.
The first stop is Deyrulzafaran Monastery, the residence of the Metropolitan of Mardin, where prayers have been said in Aramaic, the language of Jesus, for more than six centuries. From there the road leads to Dara, a frontier city that changed hands between Romans and Sassanids. You walk through its rock-cut necropolis, cisterns, agora, bridge and walls and look into the underground dungeon. A break at Beyazsu (White Water), a natural spot to rest and cool off, comes before lunch in Midyat.
After lunch you visit Mor Gabriel Monastery, whose story goes back about 1,600 years, and then the Midyat Guest House, which Turkish viewers know as a set of the Hercai series. A short walk between the traditional Midyat houses brings you to Gelüşke Han, an old inn now filled with filigree workshops, for a tea break, and on to the Midyat caves, where people once lived underground. The last hour is yours in Midyat bazaar, a good place for almond sweets, silver filigree, spices and walnut sausage, before the drive back to Mardin.
The price covers transport, airport transfers and guiding; lunch and entrance fees are paid separately. If you would also like to see Hasankeyf, it can be added to the day for a surcharge per vehicle. Times follow the summer schedule, so in winter the day may end a little earlier.
