6 Day Jordan Tour with Two Nights at the Dead Sea

Head north to Jerash, ancient Gerasa and one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East, to see Hadrian's Arch, the Oval Plaza, the colonnaded street and the Temple of Artemis. Next is Ajloun Castle, built in 1184 by a commander of Salah ad-Din to keep watch over the Jordan Valley. Back in Amman, tour the Citadel with the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace, then the Roman Theatre and the old downtown markets. Dinner and overnight in Amman. Meals: breakfast, dinner.

Drive south to Petra. Spend a full day in Petra, the rose-red city of the Nabataeans and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. After a short ride on horseback you continue on foot through the Siq to the Treasury, then past the Street of Facades and the Theatre to the Royal Tombs. Early morning and late afternoon give the best light. In the evening, continue to a desert camp in Wadi Rum for a Bedouin-style dinner, an evening of traditional music and a night under the desert sky. Meals: breakfast, dinner.

After breakfast at the camp, set off on a 2-hour 4x4 jeep tour of Wadi Rum, the "Valley of the Moon". The route passes sandstone and granite mountains, red dunes, natural arches and ancient rock inscriptions left by the Nabataeans and the peoples before them. In Madaba, the "City of Mosaics", see the 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Church of St. George. Then climb Mount Nebo, where Moses viewed the Promised Land, and look out over the Jordan Valley towards Jericho and Jerusalem. Continue to the Dead Sea for dinner and overnight.
