This five-day King’s Highway tour is for travellers who want to drive south the scenic way, following the ancient road from Amman to Petra rather than the faster desert road. Starting at Amman airport, you stop at Madaba, Mount Nebo and the Crusader castle of Kerak on day two, spend a full day in Petra, sleep at a Wadi Rum desert camp and float in the Dead Sea on the way back to Amman.
The overnight in Petra itself puts you close to the site the evening before your full day there. After the desert camp and a jeep tour, the return drive runs north via the Dead Sea, so you swim and still sleep in Amman before your flight.
The four nights are split between Amman (two), Petra and Wadi Rum (one each), with breakfast and dinner on the days listed in the program.
On arrival at Amman airport, our representative greets you and helps you through arrival formalities before your transfer to the hotel in Amman. Dinner and overnight in Amman. (Dinner)
Your journey south begins in Madaba, the 'City of Mosaics', where the floor of the Church of St. George holds a 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land. From Mount Nebo, the place where Moses looked out over the Promised Land, a clear day lets you see the Jordan Valley, Jericho and Jerusalem. The King's Highway then leads you to Kerak Castle, one of the largest Crusader strongholds in the region, perched on a hilltop above the Dead Sea valley. Continue to Petra for dinner and the night. (Breakfast, Dinner)
Today belongs to Petra, the rose-red city of the Nabataeans and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Begin with a short horse ride, then follow the Siq on foot to the Treasury and carry on past the Street of Facades, the Theatre and the Royal Tombs. Early morning and late afternoon give the warmest light. In the evening, arrive at a desert camp in Wadi Rum for a Bedouin-style dinner, traditional music and a night under the desert sky. (Breakfast, Dinner)
After breakfast at the camp, a 2-hour 4x4 jeep tour takes you through Wadi Rum, the 'Valley of the Moon', among sandstone and granite mountains, red dunes, natural arches and ancient rock inscriptions left by the Nabataeans and earlier peoples. Drive north to the Dead Sea and take time to float in its water, then continue to Amman for dinner and overnight. (Breakfast, Dinner)
After breakfast, transfer to Amman airport, where our representative assists you with departure formalities. (Breakfast)
